An Important Part of the World's Largest Environmental Project
Grontmij has been the leading firm in developing Detailed Design of Fire protection for Chernobyl NPP (Reactor No 4), Deaerator Stack Building.
Following the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, a concrete sarcophagus was constructed over the damaged Reactor No 4 at the Chernobyl NPP.
A new Object Shelter is under construction. The Object Shelter will be built as an enormous steel structure, which will cover the entire old sarcophagus.
The new Object Shelter will also cover buildings that will be used as work premises for the people who will work long-term to remove all the remaining fuel from the destroyed reactor. The Deaerator Stack Building is partly damaged and contaminated and connected to the destroyed reactor. The building will be important during future decommissioning and dismantling work.
A well-functioning fire protection has been installed in the existing Deaerator Stack Building - both to minimise the risks for people in this building and to prevent radioactivity from leaking out in case of fire. The building is a nine level building with a total floor area exceeding 20 000 m2.
Specific equipment and technical solutions elaborated
Grontmij has been the leading firm in developing Detailed Design of Fire protection for Chernobyl NPP (Reactor No 4), Deaerator Stack Building. The Detailed Design is performed in accordance with Ukrainian legislation and elaborated in close cooperation with a local sub-consultant, ADI.
The Detailed Design includes dismantling of combustible material from the building, reconstruction of damaged parts of the building, construction of inside walls and installation of new fire proof doors, smoke control and smoke management system, lightening system and a complete fire alarm and fire fighting system. Due to partly high contamination level specific equipment and technical solutions have been elaborated and used in the project.
During the construction period Grontmij and the sub-consultant ADI have been engaged as Engineer of Record throughout Construction of Shelter Object Fire Protection System, i.e. during procurement, installation and commissioning of all parts included in the Detailed Design.
