Municipal Programme for Solid Waste Management
To create a modern and environmentally sound waste management in Bosnia Herzegovina, a pilot project where Grontmij helps with world leading Nordic expertise in the area is conducted.
The need for involvement in the environmental sector is large in Bosnia Herzegovina. To reduce poverty, natural resources must be managed in a sustainable way, and poor quality of waste management is a growing problem in the country. Often waste is illegally deposited in the nature with pollution of for example water as a result.
As part of the aid-financed development cooperation that Sweden has with Bosnia Herzegovina, Sida invests 100 MSEK to build an effective system of waste management in the country. Grontmij has been retained to advise and support Bosnia Herzegovina at both the municipal and state level during construction.
The contract also includes to support and facilitate a nationwide information campaign, as well as to manage a fund of about 75 MSEK for investments at municipal and regional levels.
The implementation of the mission is divided into two phases. The first phase will address both the national and local level in the 13 municipalities included in regions of Zenica and Bijeljina. The regional expansion in the second phase will be determined later, based on experience from the first phase.
The mission will last for 4.5 years (2010 - 2014) with close follow up by evaluating the set goals.
